research and planning: Audience profile

we are aiming for our target audience are 18-24 year olds who enjoy indie music. after looking at the socio-economic scale, we have decided that our audience would fit into the social grade C1 which represents students. In our particular auidences spare time the activities we think they would attend gigs as opposed to going out. We also feel that they would go to house parties instead of going into town at night, and have an exclusive group of close friends who they would spend most of their time with. The type of shops they would buy their clothes from would be Topman, All Saints and that kind of genre they also as a hobby would skate and smoke. The Tv programmes that this target audience profile would watch are mainly down too earth such as 'this is England', but would mostly be watching 'MTV' and 'NME' Their favourite bands would be bands such as the kooks or artic monkeys and they would enjoy music such as..

As you can see by the video and the music its very simplistic but at the same time uplifted and happy, this video is also low-fi which matches what we want our video to be simular too, but obviously ours will be different in the location and props.

Post - Pitch

We have received some useful feedback for our pitch, one of the comments we received was that its very suitable for our target audience and it was not original but suitability is good. This is quite useful as it changes the perspective we could take on the originality of the music video, such as we could change some things around and see what works best. Another comment we received was that we need to pin down the narrative aspect and we need to look at videos such as The Beatles 'Hard Days Night' I think this feedback is very useful as it gives us an idea of what the video will consist of for example if its going to be low-fi or the editing of the colour to be black and white to give off more of an indie feel to the video. In response to this feedback we have to take into account what has been said and what we can do, we will obviously have to adjust to what our audience think is best and what we think is most suitable for who we are aiming for.

Mood board

This is my mood board that i have designed to target my type of audience, the genre of the mood board is indie hence the pictures of the kooks and the Arctic monkeys. I think this targets my audience well as I have used pictures of artists such as the kooks which is my sort of genre, and seeing as the pictures are mostly stereotypical of roughed up artists smoking it shows how they are very independent and rebellious.

Music and effects theory

http://clearinghouse.missouriwestern.edu/manuscripts/325.php

What kind of questions are the researchers interested in?

First off this website is focusing on the genres of heavy metal and rap because the younger generation of today can relate to this type of music, also adults don't appreciate this type of genre therefore this is challenging the dominant ideology. The questions that the researchers are most interested in are for example 'why does this type of genre inspire you so much?'

http://www.ehow.com/facts_4896441_effects-rap-music-behavior.html

What are the key concerns that have been raised about the effects of rap music?

That the music its self is influencing teenagers to copy what is said in the lyrics such as to encourage violence and glamourises criminal lifestyle.

Her theory was not about violence or rap music but the fact that people should be focusing on issues such as guns, lack of education, violence and increase in crime.

Brief history of music video

The first music video was made in 1894 which consisted of a few still images which brought about great entertainment. After this 'talkies' were introduced in 1926 these videos lasted 6 minutes in length and featured deco style animations and backgrounds. The next thing introduced were promotional clips in the 1940's for the Panoram visual jukebox, these were short videos of musical selections mainly of the band.

This is the first ever music video on MTV, and as you can see its very basic, low budget and low-fi.

This video is one of the more influential videos that is much more high budget and a lot more technical.

On the other hand, this video shows how that a low budget video like this can still use technology we have in the 21st century.

This video shows a stereotypical view of girls and is very over the top sexy video, this differs from a typical sexy video such as Madonna who shows off a bit, this takes it overtly sexual in showing off too much.

This video shows audience orientation, this is different from the other videos as the artists has used clips of people singing the words. this shows how technology has changed over the years in which you can change and tamper with a music video through editing.

Digipack Template

This is my first draft of a CD cover which I have done in photo shop, I have done this so i can come to terms with how to use all the parts of photo shop and how I would need to create a CD cover for when it comes down to doing this properly.

Omniscient + Restricted narration

This video shows how the narration is omniscient an example of this is their are many parallel edits of the hero and the clips show how their are elements of the video that the characters do not know about.
Some of the video also show point of view shots which mean they could have a bit of restricted narration this could show suspense to the audience as it creates emotional involvement and tension within the shots.

Music video and narrative: Propp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iELKqNIevAU&ob=av3n

The media language uses proppian roles. an example of this is where their is shots showing the hero beating up the villain in a comical magazine. this is a stereotypical view of a superhero beating the villains and everyone loves him as Vladimir Propp stated.

The proppian roles are not very clear in my video as it is different from other typical hero videos as the villain wants to kidnap the hero so the villains can be the heros of the city but you still see the hero as the good person.

My video is quite stereotypical in the fact the real hero is seen as a big white muscular man and the other 3 people who are trying to be heroes are all big white muscular men aswell.

Music video and narrative: Todorov

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iELKqNIevAU&ob=av3n

In this video the villains (the hoosiers) tie up the hero and create a disruption then the hero re-establishes the new equilibrium as they didn't fully get rid of him.

the narrative models are structured through close ups and repetetive shots of the hero tied up and at the end when the villains think they have prevailed their is a close up of the hero opening his eyes.

My video isn't a stereotypical video of representation of a superhero and a villain, because the villains are the one who are dominant in this video but at the end the hero opens his eyes which reinforces how he is still alive.

Research and planning: Andrew Goodwin

this song related the lyrics to the music through movements and images on screen. it also has multiple close ups of the artist and the video relates to the genre of music. there is no voyeurism present in the video because it is by a female artist.

this video uses a lot of voyeurism and the camera is mostly focused on the artist at a close up position. There is a lot of relation between the lyrics and the video for example they write what they sing on the video. this video is genre related as it is a rap video and the video has stereotypical features such as women dancing in limited clothing.

there is little reference to Andrew Goodwin's list. their is nothing really genre related in this video as it is quite random. their are very little close ups of the artist as it is very basic and a hand-held video. There is no Voyeurism involved in this video and their is no intertextual references to other media texts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8syN4DJvczk&p=FE72B287802138D8&playnext=1&index=40

All these music videos are all produced by Spike Jonze, they all have similarities which are all 6 of them are very entropic and are very random videos, they all are quite loud and their is always a lot of movement in the videos. Another characteristic that most of them have are they all are comical and none of them are really relevant or tell a story.

I think you could say he has an auteur signature in the way that he consistently produces videos that are similar in the fact they are all random and don't really have a point to them, another thing you could say is that they are quite amateur and simplistic which you may be able to vaguely recognise that he produced if you didn't know who he was as some of them are fairly similar. All his videos are very entropic but in different ways and they all are different types of music showing he doesn't just specify on one genre but he produces videos for a wide range of different music.

Genre and Music video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHoF3a6Q9Wk

This first link is girls aloud call the shots and this shows a group of women dancing round in little costumes to portray how they are sexy, the target audience of this song would be fairly young teenage girls.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMiy_UsrPDs&feature=related

The second link is of Cheryl Cole fight for this love and this is spectacle as their are a lot of costume changes and different things happening, this also is targeted at young teenage girls.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcWTTs8QVRc

The third link is of guns n roses knocking on heavens door and this is of a performance as the video is set on a stage and its shown as he is playing to an audience, the target audience for this would be for men over the age of 16 that are into heavy metal/rock music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlUKcNNmywk

The fourth link is red hot chilli peppers californication and the video is of the band in a video game, this could be seen as quite unreal, the target audience for this is for mainly young men and teenagers that are into sort of rock music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVkUvmDQ3HY

The fifth link is eminem without me which is a rap video but this video is different as he as added quite a comical aspect to it, this is mainly targeted at men 14-25 year old who are into rap music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oomCIXGzsR0&feature=related

The last link is of the karate kid soundtrack your the best around and this is a film parody, the target audience for this would be mainly for anyone who would watch the film so young kids or families.

Music video, redundancy and entropy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHoF3a6Q9Wk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnLrNHCQPP0&feature=related

The first two are quite entropic because the lyrics dont relate to the video at all.

The second two are quite stereotypical and are redundant because their video is quite basic and nothing you wouldnt expect.

The Final Product.

Post-Production: Digital Technology

How did your editing go? what would of helped you edit more efectively?

I think the editing stage was the most vital component when puting this video together and easily the hardest. if the editing proccess was not so time consuming i feel that the task would have ran alot more smoothly and therefore better, but thats all apart of gaining greater knowledge of the use of certain technology. i think that the main problem was no one knew what or how to use any of the key tools to edit the video, i for one at the start didnt even know how to get the audio or video on to the timeline. this came as shock to us knowing we had to learn all of the tools in such a small time but nethertheless we got on with it, if any of us had greater or even any knowledge of adobe premeir pro before we started then we would of been able to complete the task alot more easier and our production would have been better but these are the thngs i am going have to consider going into A2.

Specificly - What are the tools and devices used editing tat you felt were particularely useful?

the main tools that i liked to use was the speed/duration tool, cut tool and the crop tool. these were 3 of the vital tools that i used when editing the video and after a while i found it comfortable and easy to use.

Production

What did you learn during the production task?

During the production task i learnt more of how to apply team work and team leadership into the task aswell as learning the difficulties of how much preperation their is needed for a 52 second video, also learnt how to storyboard effectively by gathering up all the needed shots and scripts to put in on our task.

How did the shoot go? what went wrong? what do you need to do to make sure these things dont happen again?

I think the shoot went fairly well with only a few mistakes here an their, the main mistakes were things such as leaving the camera still filming after we had done, lip syncing or singing the wrong words, talking over the film when being recorded and things in the shot that we didnt need, which steph shows perfectly in the picture below.

In the lip syncing exercise before our main mistake which i have stated already a few posts back was the fact that we lip synced to a whole 2 minutes of the music an then found out we hadnt even pressed record! which obviously is just an easily made minor mistake which didnt cost us too much time.
Obviously next time we will be more aware of these minor mistakes and concentrate on getting everyone to do what they need to be doing off the set.

Production: Digital Technology

How did your knowledge of production technology develop?

I feel that my knowledge developed hugely of production technology, i can notice this in myself because when i look back at the start of the task, i did not have a clue how to use adobe premier pro and found it challenging even to use a camera effectively. but now i have learnt many things from this production even fairly simplistic things like how to fade out at the end of the video or how to speed up and change the pitch of the music in the background.
When starting this task i couldnt work out how to even put the tape in or press record, this lead to our lip syncing video having to be made agin because first time round we did not record it, but i think my camera skills have grown hugely.
I also have a much wider knowledge of how to handle the camera to its full use and capture the parts i need, framing them and then to get rid of all the unwanted footage which has also came to give me team leader skills when taking charge off the situation in the task.

What sort of technology skills would you want to develop during the A2 year?

I would like to spend more time on adome premier pro as i feel that if i spent some more time on the programme i could come to terms with it and then be able to use it alot more effectively and fast paced which would aid me keeping on track with my other work.

Research and Planning.

Before we started to film the busted task we created a storyboard of every single shot that we were going to do and wrote down what type of shots they were, the next thing we did was to make a shooting script where we would get all the proper shots of the real video and select people from the class as the cast members and get them to bring the right props in on the right days.

Which of the planning tasks was most useful?

Getting the class to lip sync to a selected song was very useful as it gave us an idea of how we were going to go about doing it and showed the difficulty of the task of lip syncing was especially to a song which alot of us did not know the lyrics to. i think the most useful task was actually trying to merge the original track with our lip syncing video as it showed us that its not simple but made us more familiar with the programme adobe premier pro.

What kinds of planning did you wish you done more of?

I think we needed a bit more preperation of learning the music and in which order the shots and scenes were in, also trying to keep cast members up to date as some times some of the cast members didnt know what days they were meant to bring what in even though their was a sheet provided.

What kinds of planning do you expect to be doing during the A2 year?

I think the planning in the A2 year needs to be more thorough and up to date because if you fall behind it is then harder to get back on track especially if the work we are doing is quite detailed, I think the planning will be relatively the same but we will be alot more knowledgable therefore more able to keep on track with the tasks we are doing. next year we will definatly have to plan out our time distribution, storyboarding and shooting scripts as these are 3 of the vital things to making our task successful.

Introduction.

After we came back from our media exams we all had 2 summer tasks to do, the first being a lip syncing task where we would work with another person and video ourselves lip syncing to a chosen song. The second task was for the whole class to remake shot for shot the first 50 seconds of busted "that's what I go to school for" in Adobe premiere pro.
